How does 3DS verification work in online payments?

Learn more about how 3DS adds extra security to our Payment Link.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

If you sell online using our Payment Link, security in your transactions is one of your biggest priorities. 3D Secure (3DS) is a trusted method used by payment systems to add an extra layer of protection when customers pay with a credit card online.

What is 3DS?

3DS is an authentication protocol used to verify that the person making the online purchase is the actual cardholder. This extra step helps protect both you and your customers from fraud.

How 3DS works during a payment?

When a customer checks out with their card, the payment system may prompt an additional verification step.

Here’s how that usually works:

  1. The buyer types in card number, expiry date, and CVV on the checkout page.

  2. If the bank sees the need for extra security, it sends a verification request.

  3. The buyer confirms their identity using one of several methods (like a one-time code, bank app notification, or biometric scan).

    1. If the customer confirms correctly, the payment continues as normal.

    2. If authentication fails, the payment can be declined.

Common ways customers verify

Banks or card issuers decide how the customer proves their identity. Typical methods include:

  • One-time code sent via SMS or WhatsApp

  • Notification in the bank’s app

  • Biometric confirmation (like fingerprint or Face ID)

  • Pre-set password for online payments

When customers might see 3DS

Not all payments require 3DS every time. The bank can decide based on factors regarding the purchase history of the payment method being used.

When verification appears, it’s just a normal security step to protect the purchase. If your customer is paying with a wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, they might not need to complete this verification step at all.

How you can help your customers

If a buyer is unsure about the verification step, you can guide them to:

  1. Look for a notification from their bank.

  2. Open the bank app to approve the purchase.

  3. Try again with a stable internet connection and an unlocked card.

Let them know this step is normal and helps keep their purchase safe.
