Protect your online sales from fraud and chargebacks

A practical guide to risk-based verification and dispute-support evidence

Selling online creates new opportunities, but it also requires risk-based safeguards to help protect your business, reduce fraud risk, and manage potential disputes or chargebacks. When used appropriately, verification can help protect your business, confirm that a purchase was authorized, and keep useful records in case of a dispute.

These steps do not guarantee that a chargeback will be prevented or reversed. They are meant to help you collect relevant transaction evidence while protecting your customer's privacy.

🔍 Identity verification

Verification should not be a routine step for every online sale. For higher-risk orders, you may ask for limited supporting information before shipping or delivering the product, when there is a specific fraud concern and as permitted by applicable law, card-network rules, and processor/acquirer requirements.

Higher-risk situations may include high-value orders, mismatched buyer/cardholder/shipping information, use of a third-party card, repeated failed payment attempts, urgent shipping requests, local pickup, unusual delivery instructions, or other fraud indicators.

Depending on the risk, you may consider asking for:

Card photo

  • Show only the last 4 digits and the cardholder’s name.

  • Hide all other information. No CVV or full card number.

Identification document

  • Ask for documents with a photo and issuing state, such as an ID card or driver’s license.

Handwritten cardholder statement

  • Ask the cardholder to handwrite an authorization for the purchase.

  • Combine this with the card photo and the identification document to strengthen security.

  • Highly recommended when the buyer is using a card that belongs to another person or when the transaction presents higher risk.
